Popularity In Junior / Senior High

Today, I was fortunate to hear about diverse and true stories of popularity in different schools and towns. Some were horrifying, and some were surpirisingly uplifting. For example, one girl talked about a school which had a "jock bench" where all the "jocks" would sit daily and mock people they didn't like as they passed, especially "the new kid". Another girl's experience was different: she and her group of 10 or so friends made it their mission to make every newcomer their friend.

As a teacher, how will I deal with the smorgasbord of characters in my life, knowing that there are groups that may not get along, and some individuals who will be affected by social issues and need a friend? I can't be friends with all the kids. It's not my job to be the icon of "popular," I'm supposed to be the leader of the classroom.

One thing I would like to try is have discussions on a separate area of the classroom, where we can all sit together and discuss the lesson as a class - everyone can be actively involved - no matter the manner in which they participate. This will leave no opportunity for snoozing in the back or idle chatter, at least while the lesson is being taught. During task time, I will be doing my rounds around the class, making sure everyone is on task. My paperwork can wait till class is over.

Just one idea. More to come.
